For people to view your website, you have to pick a place to "Host" your website. Basically, your site sits on a server that has access to the outside world, so that people can view it. The main question is "Where do I put my website?"
Option A: "I have a computer (or server) that accesses the outside world, and I leave it on all the time, why not host it myself?" This is always an option. Factor in some more questions... What happens if your computer (or server) fails? How often does my computer (or server) back up? What happens if electricity goes out for a couple of days? Does your Internet Service Provider (ISP) allow you to host websites? What happens if the ISP is down for a while? How can I get email for my domain name? Can I view statistics on my website? Is my website firewall protected? This almost sounds like too much work. Don't forget the up front costs that may also include yearly "upgrade" fees.
Option B: "Find the cheapest hosting company around." When you look for something cheap, most of the time you'll find something cheap. To explain further, for a hosting company to give you cheaper hosting, what do you have give up? Is the server a Windows Server or a Linux Server? What version of Windows is on it? What type of email program is offered? Is Virus and SPAM protection included? What about viewing email away from your computer? Does this hosting company offer WebMail? Is there firewall protection on the server protecting my investment? Is there a contract? How long will it take to reach customer service?
